Double & Triple Glass Unit Replacement in Edmonton: When You Don’t Need a New Window

A foggy, cracked or damaged window does not always mean that the entire window needs to be replaced. In many cases, if the window frame and hardware are still in good condition, replacing only the insulated glass unit can be a practical and cost-effective solution.

At FP Windows & Doors, we replace double and triple glass units in Edmonton and surrounding areas and can help determine whether your window requires new glass or complete replacement.

What Is an Insulated Glass Unit?

An insulated glass unit (IGU) consists of two or three panes of glass assembled into a sealed unit. The space between the panes helps improve the thermal performance of the window and can contain insulating gas such as argon.

The glass unit is installed inside the existing window sash or frame.

This means that the glass unit and the window itself are not the same thing. If the frame is still performing properly, it may be possible to replace the glass unit without removing the complete window.

Signs Your Glass Unit May Need Replacement

One of the most common signs of a failed insulated glass unit is fogging or moisture between the panes. Because this moisture is inside the sealed unit, it normally cannot simply be cleaned from the interior or exterior surface.

Other common reasons for glass replacement include:

  • Cracked or broken glass
  • Condensation or fogging between panes
  • Failed glass seals
  • Visible damage to the insulated glass unit
  • Upgrading an existing glass unit where the window system allows it

Before recommending replacement, the condition of the window frame, sash, hardware and seals should also be checked.

Glass Replacement vs. Full Window Replacement

Replacing only the glass unit can make sense when the existing window frame is structurally sound and operates correctly.

For example, if you have a good-quality vinyl window with a failed sealed unit, replacing the entire frame may be unnecessary.

However, glass replacement will not correct problems caused by a damaged frame, poor window installation, serious air leakage around the frame or malfunctioning hardware.

That is why the window should be inspected before deciding which option is appropriate.

Double Glass Units

Double-pane insulated glass units contain two panes of glass separated by a sealed spacer system.

They are commonly found in existing homes throughout Edmonton and can often be replaced without disturbing the complete window frame.

The replacement unit must be accurately measured and manufactured to match the existing window system.

Triple Glass Units

Triple-pane units use three panes of glass and additional insulated spaces between them.

They can provide improved thermal performance compared with many conventional double-pane configurations, making them particularly relevant for Alberta’s cold climate.

However, not every existing window is designed to accept a thicker or heavier triple glass unit. The frame, sash and hardware need to be compatible with the new glass configuration.

Why Accurate Measurement Matters

A replacement glass unit needs to match the existing window precisely.

The width, height and thickness of the unit must be determined correctly, along with the appropriate glass configuration and spacer.

Incorrect sizing can cause installation problems and may affect the operation or sealing of the window.

Professional measurement before ordering the replacement unit helps avoid these problems.

Professional Glass Unit Replacement

Glass unit replacement involves more than removing one piece of glass and installing another.

The existing glazing components must be carefully removed, the opening prepared, the new sealed unit positioned correctly and the glazing system reassembled.

During the process, we can also inspect the condition of the sash, seals and other accessible window components.

The goal is to restore the window without replacing components that are still functioning properly.
